Mass vs. Lean Production

Mass vs. Lean Production

Mass Production, as a concept, is about 100 years old. Lean Production is 60 years old but has been understood only in the last 30 years. This presentation compares Mass vs Lean Production.

Mass Production, like lots of advances, was enabled by an innovation. The standardization of parts. Subsequently without the standardization of parts, there would have been no Mass Production. With Lean Production, the enablement was due to an invention by Taiichi Ohno, andon. andon is a concept of defect eradication driven by the fact that at the time, Toyota could not afford the cost of manufacturing waste.

Finally this Mass vs Lean Production presentation uses an ecosystem as an analogy to highlight differences between the methodologies.
